Resistance lies in them having low levels of chlorogenic acid, a chemical which the larvae of the carrot fly needs for survival. This means that they appear to be unattractive to the fly and even if your crop is attacked to some degree the larvae will soon die after doing relatively little damage.

Collection comprises one each of Resistafly, Flyaway and Early Nantes.

Resistafly

Successful British breeding in improved carrot fly resistance has resulted in Resistafly, an outstanding variety with early vigour, uniform appearance, rich core colour and smooth skin. A breakthrough introduction. Recommended for mid to late season use.

Flyaway

British bred with partial Carrot Fly resistance, due to lower levels of chlorogenic acid within the developing roots. Flyaway is naturally sweet, producing early blunt ended roots, with good skin and flesh colour.

Early Nantes

Fast maturing and uniform, with a deep fresh colour and first class flavour. Suitable for early sowing in frames.

Carrots prefer a deep, rich, well drained soil which does not contain fresh manure or compost. Sow late winter to mid summer (see individual sowing instructions) in drills 1cm (½in) deep, spaced 30cm (12in) apart.

Thin seedlings carefully when large enough to handle, to reduce risk of carrot root fly attack. Thin them out so that they are finally 10cm (4in) apart.

The last thinnings should provide tender roots just large enough to be used. Harvest summer and autumn.
