Seed Search: Herb and Vegetable Categories
This is where we categorise all the Herbs and Vegetables in our catalogue into groups. We have separate pages for Flowers, Shrubs and Trees and Garden Sundries and Accessories
Use the search facility above to search the entire catalogue if you are looking for plants or products by name. And don't forget that the menu on the left also provides quick access to most of our categories, and to complete indexes of all of our varieties.
There are three basic awards in the horticultural world: All America Selections, Fleuroselect and the Royal Horticultural Society. You can find our more about each of these organisations and what their judging and awarding criteria are by clicking on their respective links above.
We list herbs for culinary use (not medicinal). We have assembled a few of the most common herbs into their own lists, but the A to Z list is probably the one you will find most useful.
Nutritional experts generally consider that we eat too few beans. With their ease of growing and the wide variety that are available, we really have no excuse.
Some people love them and some people simply can't stand them. They are, however, extremely good for you, and it doesn't take much effort to have them available all year round, especially if you have a good-sized freezer.
Much more versatile than many people realize. Not hardy, but extremely easy to grow. And absolutely wonderful for introducing children to the ancient mysteries of vegetable growing.
Imagine a kitchen without access to members of this family of vegetables. Even the worst cook can bring flavour into the blandest of dishes with the addition of an onion - raw or cooked (or pickled).
Some people will no longer grow anything but organic. Some people insist that organic vegetables taste better. But one thing is certain: - if you buy organic seed, then you must use organic growing methods. Otherwise what ends up on your table is not an organically grown vegetable.
Apart from the occasional carrot, some people eat almost none of these important vegetables. Beetroot, radishes and carrots are wonderful additions to the summer diet.
Generally considered summer crops, but corn salad produces sweet tender leaves in the middle of winter. And rocket can also be harvested in the winter months if given a little protection.
Not the most commonly grown vegetables in the small garden, but don't overlook some of the new varieties of spinach, which could just as easily be listed under salad crops and are quick and easy to grow.
A greenhouse widens the range of these vegetables that can be grown, but outdoor varieties of tomatoes and cucumbers produce quality crops, and a warm sunny windowsill will do nicely for peppers and aubergines.
Most people probably don't think of growing fruit from seed. But there are a useful number of varieties that crop very well from seed. And you simply can't beat an alpine strawberry for flavour.
