Description
A novel Japanese salad onion with extremely thick tubular foliage. Plants given a wider spacing can achieve huge stems similar to leeks. The flavour is unusually sweet lower in the stems and more pungent towards the leaves. Winter hardy.
Sowing Instructions
Sow March to August, every 4 weeks. Sow thinly in broad drills, about 1cm (½in) deep, allowing 30cm (12in) between drills.
Growing Instructions
No thinning necessary unless larger stems are required when they should be thinned to 13-25mm (½-1in) apart.
Aftercare Instructions
Draw up soil to larger stems as you would for leeks. Keep well watered during dry periods.
Kitchen Notes
Dual purpose as a Spring Onion or as a 'leek' for salads, stir fries and cooked dishes. |
