Sow thinly from April to August at two week intervals 6mm (¼in) deep in drills 30cm (12in) apart. A moist, well drained fertile soil which has plenty of compost dug in the previous autumn is best. In very hot weather it's best to water the soil before sowing, let it drain and sow in the early afternoon. An early spring sowing under cloches will provide a really early crop or alternatively sow indoors in March/April, transplant into trays, harden off and plant out after all risk of frost has gone.
Water well until established. Harvest when the head feels firm when gently pressed. The heads keep well in a fridge if they are wrapped in polythene film.
The dark green leaves of lettuce are a good source of beta-carotene and Vitamin A.
