Long, slender, mid green fruits with short spines. A more reliable crop if grown under glass but will grow outdoors in a sunny situation.
For early crops sow under protection in pots of compost, 20mm deep, in March to April. Transplant outdoors in late May or when frost risk has passed, 80 cm apart each way. Seed can be sown direct in the open ground from May to June by placing 2 seeds per station, 20mm deep, and 80 cm apart. Keep soil moist. Thin to strongest seedling.
Cut fruits regularly to encourage long continuous production. Cut before fruits show signs of producing seeds, best done early morning when it is fresh and cool.
Cucumbers are 96% water, low in calories but high in potassium. Avoid peeling as the dark green skin is rich in carotenoid antioxidants.
Serving suggestion - Cucumber, mayo and cream cheese sandwiches. Cream mayo and cream cheese together. Mix in Italian salad dressing, adding peeled and sliced cucumber.
