Pumpkin growers have produced huge fruits weighing up to 630kg! Even if you don't produce a record breaker, pumpkins are great for pies and for Halloween. Instructions: Sow mid spring, singly, 6mm deep in 7.5cm pots of good compost. Grow in warm, well-lit conditions, and keep well fed. Once germinated (takes up to 12 days) put the pots outside for 10-15 days, before transferring to the soil after all risk of frost has passed. Place them 1.8-2.4m apart in a warm, sheltered spot in full sun, in compost-rich soil. Allow only three pumpkins per plant and then single out to leave the best specimen. Water generously and feed regularly, placing a tile under the fruit to keep it clear of the soil. The World Record for the heaviest ever grown is 630kilos (1,385 lbs).
