There are three basic awards in the horticultural world: All America Selections, Fleuroselect and the Royal Horticultural Society. You can find our more about each of these organisations and what their judging and awarding criteria are by clicking on their respective links above.
Annuals are plants which are grown from seed and last one year - they live fast and die young. If they can survive freezing temperatures, they are called hardy. Half-hardy annuals must be sown indoors and only planted out when there is no longer any danger of frost.
Biennials are similar to annuals, except that their life-cycle takes place over two years rather than one. In other words, they flower the year after they are sown. The best known biennials are probably foxgloves, iceland poppies and sweet williams, but there are many more.
Perennials are plants that last for many years. In the vast majority of cases, these plants die back to ground level each winter, and re-emerge the following spring. We have, however, added a small list of evergreen perennials.
Bedding is temporary or semi-permanent planting primarily intended to provide blocks of seasonal colour and interest - the kind of thing municipal parks are so good at. Summer bedding is the easiest to achieve because you can include half-hardy plants, but winter and spring bedding are also relatively easy to achieve.
Borders are permanent plantings of mainly hardy herbaceous perennials. Well planned, with plants carefully chosen for their surroundings and companions, they can be the making of a garden.
The following categories have been put together to make it easy for you to find plants suited to your particular requirements or location.
