This very lovely Viola, hailing from the Alps of Central Europe, is normally found with mauve/purple flowers. By careful selection, T&M bring you blue flowers in delightful shades from pale, to sky and slate blue with a discrete yellow eye and black whisker-like markings. Although wonderful container/basket plants, you can use them in bedding or as a rockery plant. Flowers summer. Height 10-15cm (4-6in).
Sow from late winter to early summer in a good seed compost just covering the seed with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Germination takes 6-30 days at 15-18C (60-65F). Sealing in a polythene bag after sowing is helpful. Place in the dark until the first seedlings start to come through. Lower the temperature a little after germination and grow on in good light.
Prefers full sun and ordinary garden soil. Water well after planting, afterwards in dry spells.
The petals make a colourful addition to green salads, can candied to top desserts etc. or used to make violet soup.
