Here is an annual that's "as pretty as a picture". There is an incessant parade of sumptuous 2cm, rich deep purple to black flowers with - the master touch - a scalloped silvery-white edge. It has truly ground hugging habit (not unlike annual alyssum) that will provide ground cover and contrast for all containers, hanging baskets, and it makes a tidy edging plant. Trailing 5-10cm (2-4in). Height: 30-38cm (12-15in).
Sow early spring outdoors where they are to flower. Prepare the ground well and rake to a fine tilth before sowing. Sow 1.5mm (1/16in) deep in rows 15cm (6in) apart. Germination usually takes approximately 21 days.
An autumn sowing outdoors will provide earlier flowers and in a coldframe will produce spring flowering pot plants in the cold greenhouse.
