Sow from spring to mid-summer in a good seed compost, just covering the seed. Germination takes 10-21 days at 21C (70F). Transplant the seedlings when large enough to handle into boxes or 7.5cm (3in) pots. Grow on in cooler conditions, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out 30cm (12in) apart in ordinary garden soil sun or light shade. Water regularly in dry weather. Pick the outside leaves off all the plants regularly to encourage fresh growth. As a pot plant prick out of boxes into 8cm (3in) pots and finally into 15cm (6in) pots. Grow in a cool, airy, well lit spot.
